What Is Generative Engine Optimization (GEO)?
The emerging discipline for getting your brand cited in AI-generated answers — and why GEO is the next frontier after SEO.
If SEO was about getting found on Google, GEO is about getting trusted by AI. Generative Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring your digital presence so that when an AI engine generates an answer, your brand is the one it cites.
How GEO differs from SEO
SEO optimizes for an index. GEO optimizes for a reasoning model. Google shows 10 blue links. ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews generate a single synthesized answer — and cite 2-4 sources. If you're not in those sources, you don't exist.
The three pillars of GEO
1. Structured data
JSON-LD schema is the native language of AI engines. Organization, Service, Product, Article, and FAQPage schemas tell AI exactly what you sell, who you serve, and what questions you answer.
2. Entity consistency
Your brand must be unmistakably the same entity across every signal: your website, Google Business Profile, LinkedIn, industry directories, press mentions. Inconsistent NAP data or divergent brand descriptions fragment the entity AI is trying to build.
3. Q&A content
AI engines are trained on question-answer pairs. FAQ content, definitional sentences ("X is a Y that does Z"), and question-based headings map directly to the patterns AI uses when generating answers.
